I initially thought this might be due to the mixture being too thick, or the stainless steel mesh being too open.<\/p>\n<p>Later on I realized that letting the heated pine rosin\u00a0and the activated carbon\u00a0sit for too long was causing the carbon to become oversaturated with the non-conductive rosin. I decided to give it one more shot, and mix something conductive with the rosin.<\/p>\n<p>I cut up some steel wool into small bits and mixed it with the melted rosin:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/cutting_filings.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-374\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-374\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/cutting_filings-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"cutting_filings\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/cutting_filings-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/cutting_filings-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/cutting_filings-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I put the steel mesh in first, then added the steel mesh and rosin:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/take1_filings.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-375\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-375\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/take1_filings-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"take1_filings\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/take1_filings-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/take1_filings-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/take1_filings-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then sprinkled the carbon on top. I am only using ten LEDs in parallel. No resistors or anything else.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/take1_2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-380\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-380\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/take1_2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"take1_2\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/take1_2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/take1_2-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/take1_2-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I went home an tried the cells with the LEDs I ordered for the project (more on that later).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/miso_3.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-381\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-381\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/miso_3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"miso_3\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/miso_3-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/miso_3-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.aaronparsekian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/miso_3-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My batteries kept close to 100lumens of LEDs lit the whole night! The only byproduct was that the steel turned the water brown.
